सत्येंद्र कुमार पाठक का जन्म बिहार के मगध क्षेत्र की ज्ञान-भूमि पर अरवल जिले के करपी में १५ जून १९५७ को जन्म हुआ है । उनकी प्रारंभिक चेतना पर मगध की प्राचीन संस्कृति, यहाँ के ऐतिहासिक टीलों, अभेद्य पर्वतों और जीवनदायिनी नदियों (जैसे मोरहर, फल्गु और गंगा , सोन नद, पुनपुन , गंडक , बागमती, नर्मदा , शिप्रा , यमुना नदी ) का गहरा प्रभाव पड़ा। बचपन से ही इतिहास, सनातन काल-गणना, खगोल विज्ञान और साहित्य के प्रति उनकी गहरी रुचि ने उन्हें एक पारंपरिक पाठक के बजाय एक गंभीर शोधकर्ता के रूप में स्थापित किया।
उन्होंने केवल वातानुकूलित पुस्तकालयों में बैठकर शोध नहीं किया, बल्कि मगध के सुदूर ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों, धूल-धूसरित पगडंडियों, प्राचीन मंदिरों और पहाड़ियों की खाक छानकर वहाँ बिखरी पड़ी लोक-गाथाओं तथा पुरातात्विक साक्ष्यों को सहेजने का जीवंत कार्य किया। उनका मानना है कि मगध का वास्तविक इतिहास केवल पन्नों में नहीं, बल्कि यहाँ के लोक-गीतों, लोक-कलाओं और खेतों में काम करने वाले किसानों की लोक-भाषा 'मगही' में जीवित है।

श्री पाठक केवल अतीत के इतिहासकार नहीं हैं, बल्कि वर्तमान के सजग प्रहरी भी हैं। उन्होंने मगध क्षेत्र की मोरहर नदी और अन्य जल स्रोतों के ऐतिहासिक महत्व तथा वर्तमान में उनके संरक्षण पर विस्तृत विवेचन प्रस्तुत किया है। उनका स्पष्ट मत है कि नदियाँ केवल जलधारा नहीं, बल्कि हमारी कृषि, संस्कृति और सभ्यता की जीवन रेखा हैं। यदि नदियाँ मरेंगी, तो संस्कृति भी विलुप्त हो जाएगी। इसके साथ ही, उन्होंने गया और जहानाबाद की प्राचीन 'सूर्य-शक्ति परंपरा' (छठ पूजा और सूर्य पूजा की वैज्ञानिकता) पर गहरा काम किया है।
