Rise of Rahul Gandhi as a credible people’s leader!

By M.Y.Siddiqui

The best that has happened to India at this juncture of despondency and darkness, all around, resulting from the misrule of RSS Pariwar union government with thriving fascism, communalism, religious polarisation, massively rigged elections, partisan state organs (public institutions), discriminatory polity, minorities’ bashings, fractious social fraternity, ill-treating people as slaves, massive unemployment, almost no checks on ever rising costs of living, weaponisation of dissents, full capture of corporate media singing paean to the fascists, people getting restive as never before, etc. is the rise of one and only Rahul Gandhi as a credible people’s leader on the horizon of the nation.

Rahul Gandhi’s emergence as a credible opposition leader in India is marked by his official appointment as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha (House of the People) leading the Congress party to resurgence with 99 seats in the 2024 General Elections, and shifting the political dynamic against the ruling majority. His grassroots campaigns and ideological shift transformed him completely from make-belief sobriquet of ‘Pappu’, willfully crafted by the Sangh Pariwar through a sustained campaigns at a considerable costs, to a mass leader of substance from Bharat Jodo Yatra. He undertook extensive mass –contacts cross-country marches that reshaped his public image from an elite politician to an accessible, empathetic leader on the ground.

Rahul Gandhi’s inclusive narrative championed a counter ideology centred on social justice, economic equity, protection of marginalized communities, and defence of the Constitution of India. In his parliamentary role and electoral impact, he acquired formal LoP status that helped him assume the statutory position of Leader of the Opposition in June 2024, filling a decade-long vacuum and using the platform to aggressively challenge government policies on unemployment, inflation, and corporate accountability.

He became catalyst to INDIA Bloc formation and united diverse regional parties under the INDIA opposition coalition, successfully cutting down the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) single-party majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With that Rahul Gandhi emerged as a credible national leader and the official 12th Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, driven by mass grass roots outreach like the Bharat Jodo Yatra, an improved electoral tally for the Congress party in 2024, and a more aggressive stance in Parliament.

His shining attributes include galvanizing the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) youth movement that he amplified by condemning police crackdowns, launching parallel demonstrations, and spotlighting injured protesters. While initially running a separate student outreach campaign (Chhatron Ki Goonj), he deeply integrated himself into the CJP momentum following heavy police action in New Delhi. He amplified students’ demands and protests. Condemned police action. Spoke out against the tear gas and lathi charges on student demonstrators. Held parallel protests at Lok Kalyan Marg. Led a high-profile flash protest along side INDIA bloc leaders outside the Prime Minister Modi’s residence, resulting in a brief detention.

Rahul Gandhi presented injured protesters, such as pellet gun victims directly to the media to accuse the Union government of using excessive forces and lying about weapon deployment. He repeatedly called for removal of Union Education Minister over recurring examination irregularities and paper leaks. He also entered into direct confrontation with the central government, shifting political pressure on Union Home Minister to account for brutal use of police force against peaceful march of youth on July 20, 2026.  He aligned opposition strategy closely with Gen Z grievances over increasing unemployment and institutional capture.

Continuing challenges before him are electoral friction and criticism from detractors. Rahul Gandhi faces persistent hurdles as the Congress party continues to face intense regional defeats against the BJP in several state assembly elections. Besides, his critics argue that despite higher visibility and improved rhetoric, translating parliamentary presence into consistent organizational strength and state level victory remains an uphill task.

Rahul Gandhi is a highly accomplished astute politician. He is very articulate, convincing, and does not need teleprompter, translator, and has an honest vision for India. He, it is learnt, will not rest until Election Commission of India’s (ECI) original position as a neutral empire to conduct free and fair elections with level playing field for all contestants equally and alike, and full restoration of the public institutions like ED, CBI, CAG, Income Tax, anti-corruption watchdogs like, CVC (Central Vigilance Commission), Lokpal, educational institutions of repute, fairness of judiciary in exercising direction, superintendence and oversight on  the executive for better checks and balances, are restored  for a vibrant democratic India as conceived in the Constitution of India!
