By M.Y.Siddiqui
The world celebrates International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March every year, commemorating women’s fight for equality and liberation along with the women’s rights movement. IWD gives focus to issues like gender equality, reproductive rights, violence and abuse against women. IWD is designed to honour women’s achievements and advocate for gender equality, with the date stemming‘s strikes for bread and peace in 1917, which led to significant political change, and was later formalized by the United Nations in 1975. The date symbolizes the collective fights for women’s rights, fair working conditions, and social justice that began with early 20th Century labour movements and feminist activism in Europe and North America.
The theme for IWD 2026 is “Give to Gain” and is meant to emphasise that giving time, knowledge and support can benefit everyone. According to IWD website: “We can all give our support to gain advancement for women and girls”. The significance of Women’s Day stems from its dual role as both a celebrations and a call to action. It emphasizes the importance of Women’s Day from economic empowerment to the abolition of violence, while also encouraging unity. Celebrating Women’s Day is all about honouring the strength, resilience and brilliance of women everywhere. Purple, Green and White are the colours of IWD. Purple signifies justice, dignity and being loyal to the cause. Green symbolizes hope and White represents purity. The most important women’s rights are: Justice. Action. For All.
In India National Women’s Day is observed on 13 February every year. It is traced back to the union government’s recognition to Sarojini Naidu’s significant influence on women throughout the country. On this day in February, India remembers the woman who gave poetry to purpose and showed generations how to rise with grace and strength. Women announcement focuses on “Rights. Justice. Action For All Women and Girls.” Women across the world and in different cultures play many important roles ---be it that of a dotting daughter, sister, loving wife or a nurturing mother, and in many cases they do all this along with their duties at work. In short, women in their multitasking role impact formidably human developments. And so to honour the women in our lives, each year IWD is celebrated as designed by the UN. The March 8 is a special Day for women, to thank them for making our worlds better each day to cherish the important women in our lives, and celebrate womanhood. Each year, the IWD has a special theme. This year’s theme calls for the urgency to progress toward gender parity across the world.
